Austin, Texas — It feels as though it has been raining non-stop since yesterday afternoon. This is not a complaint. Rain baby rain.
My plants love it, my lettuce loves it. And hot damn if the farmers don’t just love it.
Yes, today at the farmers market there was drenching involved, but the lot are extremely self sufficient, plugging holes, poking tent roofs to remove water.
My tomato guy said he only had a small lot of tomatoes available and he explained that sadly they went pretty early. My loss, I know.
I thought that it was interesting that the rain was not so great for the selling today but boy oh boy, wait until this summer.
New arrivals seemed to be the vibrant gold squash and purple bell pepper…only one stand had peaches, which made me think that maybe peaches aren’t at their full height of greatness, but when I touched them boy oh boy visions of a peach compote and jam danced in my head.
I told George last night a trip to Fredricksburg is due…not to shop or Eat, but to photograph the folks coming to buy the peaches from the stands. And plus some great texture from those barns is likely to be had.
In the kitchen I’m working on a tempeh chili recipe I’ve adapted….I’ve worked this recipe about three times. This last time I smoked the tempeh on the outside grill. Mesquite gave it a smoky flavor and George cheers me on. He says this dish is getting better each time.
It’s about time to head back in the kitchen and figure out what dishes to make with the squash from the Market.
I feel a little toasty from the adobo sauce I just had on the egg whites for breakfast….eeeewwwwweeeeeeeee.
What an awesome start to Memorial Day weekend!
